Moisture Barrier

illustration showing Moisture Barrier

Moisture Barrier is the layer of material that is installed between the exterior plywood sheathing and the siding. This layer is extremely important in order to reduce airflow and eliminate moisture travel into the wall cavity. It is important to replace your moisture barrier when you replace your siding. Your existing moisture barrier will be damaged during the siding tear-off process. In addition, most moisture barrier products were installed incorrectly when your home was built.

ASTM Rated 15 lbs. Black Building Paper

ASTM rated 15 lbs. Black Building Paper has been used for decades. We resided a house built in 1905 that had this barrier and it was still in great shape. It is thicker than standard 7 lbs. Leatherback and works excellent in all applications. It is the best valued moisture barrier available.

Tyvek Building Paper

Dupont created Tyvek over 16 years ago. It is the leading synthetic barrier and has been used on over two million homes throughout the United States. We do not use a lot of Tyvek because of its high price.

Ice and Water Shield

To severely limit future moisture problems around windows and sliding doors we recommend applying an Ice and Water Shield waterproofing wrap. This is a fantastic new product that was originally developed for weather proofing roof systems. It is a 6" to 9" wide adhesive sealant strip that is applied around the perimeter (over the nailing flange) of your windows and sliding doors. Used in conjunction with a new moisture barrier and flashing it will help make the exterior of your home weatherproof.

Grace Vycor Plus™ Ice & Water Shield

Leaks around windows, doors, sills or anywhere there is an opening or area susceptible to water, air and moisture penetration is a major source of concern for builders, contractors, and owners. Understandably so. Not only do leaks in these critical non-roof flashing details make for unhappy customers, they can result in costly callbacks because they are difficult to fix after the fact. Exterior finish siding and trim coverings are your first line of defense against the elements.

Make sure you have solid back-up protection with Grace Vycor Plus™ self-adhered flashing. It can be used in all vulnerable non-roof flashing details before installing exterior finish coverings. It fully adheres to the substrate, seals around fasteners and prevents water from passing through and into the structure. Grace Vycor Plus™ is a high performance weather resistive barrier. It is highly conformable, easy to detail and provides premium protection against leaks that traditional building papers, felts and house wraps can’t match. Best of all, they employ the same proven technology as the famous Grace Vycor Plus™ Ice & Water Shield self-adhered underlayment — the market leader for over twenty years.

Decorative Trim

various types of decorative trim

All homes sided with cedar or fiber cement siding require outside and inside corner trim. When you replace your siding you may be able to reuse the existing outside corner trim, but you should always replace the 2x2 inside corner trim. However, if your existing trim is not cedar, was not pre-primed, is cracked, or overlaps your siding, you need to replace it. In addition, if you choose to install a new moisture barrier it is important to replace your trim to ensure the barrier performs properly. All of our trim is premium grade pre-primed cedar from Lakeside Lumber Company.

Decorative One Piece Outside Corners

Decorative One Piece Outside Corners are a great alternative to two-piece corners. They are custom milled to have a rounded appearance that compliments virtually any type of siding. Cedar or fiber cement siding butts into the trim. We finish the trim by caulking between them and the siding.

Two Piece Rabbetted Outside Corners

Two Piece Rabbetted Outside Corners are made by nailing two 5/4x4 pieces of clear cedar together. This creates a durable, long lasting outside corner. Cedar or fiber cement siding butts into the trim. We finish the trim by caulking between them and the siding. 2x4 Rabbetted Corners are recommended for ¾" lap siding.

Inside Corners

Inside Corners are single 2x2 pieces of clear cedar installed on the 45° and 90° inside corners of your home. Cedar or fiber cement siding butts into the trim. We finish the trim by caulking between them and the siding.

Decorative Cedar Blocks

Decorative Cedar Blocks are used to mounts light fixtures, outlets, and faucets. They look great and add a finishing touch to your finished job. Cedar or fiber cement siding butts into the blocks. We finish the blocks by caulking between them and the siding.

Window Trim

Window trim can dramatically enhance the look of any home. In the past, window trim was used on almost every home built, but over time builders have cut costs and rarely install window trim. We offer several styles of window trim, from simple to ornate. All window trim is pre-primed wood and includes metal flashing on top of the trim.

Other Custom Trim Details

We can do any type of custom trim details you can imagine. We have skilled craftsman capable of doing shingle accents, copper accents, columns, railings, porches, pergolas, decks, etc. If you can imagine it, draw it, explain it, or show us a picture of it, we can do it.
